A Loyal Love
I am a sucker for old trunks. I love the character they have and often wonder of the stories they could tell of the people and places where they have traveled. But what holds my curiosity even more are the treasures they hold when stored in someone’s home. Mine in particular holds things I have set aside and am keeping for my kids. It has their baby blankets, yearbooks, books I read to them—random sentimental things. They like it knowing I’ve set aside special things just for them.

More than having set aside special things for them, I have also set aside my love and loyalty. This love and loyalty is only for my husband, my family, and a few close friends—there’s only so much of me to go around. I have given them the best of my youth to raise them, stay at home with them, and invest in what kind of adults they will become. I fail miserably all the time. All. The. Time. I like to think they know they are more important to me than anyone else. But no. They still need to be affirmed of my love for them, they need to hear I love them, and they need time with me.
There is a love better and more perfect than this that the Lord has set aside for us. I love Psalm 89:28 where it says, “My steadfast love I will keep for him forever.” He has a perfect, unconditional, unfailing love for us. Not only that, He basically says he has set it aside for us! Just like the things I keep for my kids and the love I have just for them, He has intentionally chosen to set aside or “keep” his love for us.
Not only is the Lord keeping His loyal love for us but knowing we need to hear it (like the ones we love need to hear it), He tells us He loves us. He tells us over and over. When you are unsure if you are loved, you can rest assured the King of the Universe loves you. He sent His Son to die for you so you can turn from your sin, follow Him, and live forever with Him. He has set aside a special, unchanging love for you. A loyal love. He will always be there for you and won’t leave you for someone else. So, the next time you see an old trunk and wonder what is kept inside, remember the Lord is keeping His love for you!
